Newcastle United have announced the signing of ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius on a free transfer to add more depth to their goalkeeping department. This comes after they loaned out Martin Dubravka to Manchester United and saw their backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow get injured in training.
Newcastle United Confirm Loris Karius Signing
Karius’ Role at Newcastle Revealed
Newcastle has confirmed that Karius has signed a short-term contract that expires in January with an option for the player until the end of the season. The Magpies’ manager Eddie Howe is quite happy to sign the German goalkeeper, who made 29 appearances in the Premier League during his time at Anfield and kept 13 clean sheets for the Reds. Speaking about the new goalkeeper and his role, the Newcastle manager said: “We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.
“He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.” After being a free agent for a couple of months following his departure from Liverpool earlier this summer, the goalkeeper is surely relishing a top-tier return.

He said: “I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision. Newcastle have a great coach and play really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I’m excited to work with the coaches and my new teammates.”
Karius Returns to Premier League After Liverpool Nightmare
The 29-year-old goalkeeper spent a few years at Liverpool, making 49 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side in all competitions. However, Karius earned a bad reputation for himself after his horrific showing in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final loss to Real Madrid. He made multiple awful errors, helping Los Blancos’ run away with a win and had to withstand a lot of abuse from fans after that.

He had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin after that, but neither signed him on a permanent deal after that. Newcastle have now taken a gamble on the 29-year-old, who has made 217 appearances across his senior domestic career. Karius is only expected to be a backup for Nick Pope but could make appearances if the England international picks up any injury issues.
