Chelsea‘s transfer deadline day is a busy one as they are pushing to sign Ajax man Edson Alvarez to reinforce their midfield.
An update from Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports indicates that the team are “still pushing and growing in confidence” that they will pick up the player. Jacobs earlier reported that the midfielder missed training this morning.

Reinforcements
Thomas Tuchel’s midfield options have been whittled down due to injuries. The man himself spoke to the media following his team’s loss to Southampton and mentioned that he expected to have too many players for the two central midfield spots this season, instead, he has “… two left with experience in this position and Kova from the bench because he is not ready to play full matches at Premier League level”

Defensive Minded
The 24-year-old is quite defensive-minded and could potentially operate as a central defender if needed. He has been dubbed a “monster in the midfield” by Felipe Cardenas for his performances in the Mexican national team.
Alvarez began his career with Club America in Mexico after making his way through their youth system. He played over 100 games for the team before being picked up by Ajax in July of 2019. He proceeded to make over 100 appearances for the Eredivisie champions during his time there, scoring 9 times.
Where the midfielder has really impressed is at the international level. He has been in the CONCACAF best eleven in 2018 and 2020 and was put into the CONCACAF Gold Cup best eleven in 2021. He has been a regular fixture in the national team, accumulating 58 caps since debuting for his country in 2017.
