Ajax have rejected a £76 million bid Antony from Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Brazilian winger “only wants United”, making him increasingly unhappy with the hierarchy at the Dutch club.

Why Antony Would ‘Only Want’ United Transfer
For Antony, Old Trafford is an ideal move. Firstly, the young Brazilian is looking for a place at the World Cup in Qatar. With competition for places including Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison, Antony needs to make a name for himself. The best way to do that is with plenty of Premier League minutes.
Furthermore, the Red Devils currently provides an ideal environment for the young winger. Erik ten Hag seems interested in building a young squad with the potential for growth in a Dutch style of football. With several Brazilians already at the club and experience of working under the manager, Antony has the potential to hit the ground running.
Why Did Ajax Reject the Bid?
The leadership at the Johann Cruyff Arena values their star talent at £85 million. As Ajax have already sold Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United in this window, the club isn’t in need of funds to get players in. As a selling club, the Dutch side having a strong negotiating position is a necessity. Selling for anything less than the asking price now risks losing money on future deals.

Additionally, Alfred Schreuder’s side has its own competitions to compete in. Although they win the Eredivisie at a canter each year, the Champions League is a major challenge for the club. Retaining players of this calibre is a necessity for the Amsterdam club.
Should Manchester United Keep Pushing?
In addition to the fact Antony “only wants United”, the Red Devils could do with him in the side. With over four shots per 90, almost an assist per game and a goal every three matches, Antony is perfect for Manchester United.
With a dearth of talent at the top of the pitch, a forward of this calibre is a necessity if the Old Trafford side is to bounce back to a competitive place. Whilst not a centre-forward, Antony’s drifting inside causes issues for defenders. His high rate of aerial duel success ensures that the player could replace Cristiano Ronaldo’s physicality.
In essence, to prove that the club is still competitive, the Brazilian winger is an absolute necessity.
