Doncaster Rovers Weekly Round-Up: Two New Signings Make Three for the Summer So Far

Striker Signed

On Monday, Doncaster Rovers announced the signing of former Barnsley striker George Miller.

Miller, 23, spent last season on loan at Walsall in League Two – where Doncaster will play their football this coming campaign – and scored 12 league goals in 41 games.

His 12 goals are a significantly better turnout than Rovers have had in recent times with no player surpassing 11 league goals since John Marquis in 2018/19.

Versatile midfielder Tommy Rowe was the top goalscorer in the league last season with just seven goals, making it clear that goals are first and foremost what manager Gary McSheffrey must seek to add to his team this season.

Miller, who has signed a three-year deal at the Eco-Power Stadium, told doncasterrovers.co.uk: “I’m buzzing, I’ve got settled in nicely and already had chance to meet players and staff which has been great.

“Every week I’ll give it everything, I’ll run my socks off for the team and hopefully top it off with some goals as well.”

Highly Rated Luke Molyneux Joins

On Tuesday evening, Rovers confirmed their second signing in as many days – Luke Molyneux. Molyneux has signed a two-year deal after leaving Hartlepool United.

The attacking midfielder was Hartlepool’s top goalscorer last season with 12 goals and provides McSheffrey’s side with an even more significant goalscoring threat.

Upon his arrival, Molyneux told the club website: “I came here, spoke to the gaffer and it was a no-brainer. I just want to be at a team that can get me up to where I want to be.

“As soon as I showed up to the ground it was a no-brainer, seeing the stadium. It’s a huge club to be a part of and I know it’s going in the right direction. I want to be part of that.”

Molyneux came through the ranks at Sunderland, making six first-team appearances for the Black Cats before eventually joining Hartlepool.

He has experienced football from Championship to National League level with most of his games coming in the latter and then League Two.

At 24 years old, he remains a player with the potential to return higher up the leagues as a more serious proposition.

McSheffrey’s Verdict on New Additions

On Miller:

Gary McSheffrey said on new striker George Miler: “Having studied his game, he looks to be the type of player we haven’t got in the final third. His work rate, his energy, constantly wanting the ball in behind.

“He got a good amount of goals last year in a successful season for him.

“We want him to come in and do the same. Be a nuisance up top, cause defences problems in the league and he will certainly do that.

“He goes for 90 minutes and that was what we were missing in that area.”

On Molyneux:

McSheffrey added on the addition of Luke Molyneux: “He has the intuition to go and be the match winner but he’s got the work ethic to put the shift in as well.

“He’ll run all day for you, press from the front well but more importantly he comes to life when you get the ball. He can have a quiet game but be the matchwinner with that left foot.

“One thing I like about him is that he’s no-nonsense. If he gets half a yard, he gets his shots off and I feel we’ve missed that in the squad.”

Miller and Molyneux are Rovers’ second and third signings of the summer following the earlier arrival of midfielder Harrison Biggins.

McSheffrey’s First Pre-Season in Charge of Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster will host two Championship sides in pre-season – their first under Gary McSheffrey, who replaced Richie Wellens last winter.

Proceedings get underway on July 2 with a trip to Armthorpe Welfare. That is then followed by away days at Nuneaton Borough and Spennymoor Town before they host Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United. Pre-season will come to its conclusion away at FC United of Manchester.
