Young Arsenal Starlet Signs Long Term Deal
Khayon Edwards has put pen to paper on a new long term deal with Arsenal. David Ornstein stated that the deal with the 18-year-old will keep Edwards at the Gunners until 2025.
The striker has impressed this season in the U23’s. Despite having to end the season early due to injury, the youngster has gathered interest from clubs home and abroad. The London club could decide to loan out the young striker, but according to Ornstein, Mikel Arteta wants to develop the striker himself.
Edwards is a prolific goalscorer, so the interest was bound to pick up. Having scored 16 goals and five assists in the U18’s, the striker will step up to the U23’s. The Gunners do have a history of bringing on youngsters, also sending them on loan to Championship clubs has been very successful in the past. Emile Smith-Rowe is a prime example.
The young winger spent some time with Championship side Huddersfield Town, developing his skill and scored the goal that kept the Terriers in the Championship that year.
Although there are no current plans for the Gunners to loan out Edwards if Arteta decides that is an option there will be no shortage of offers. The youngster has been with Arsenal on a scholarship deal and could have left at the end of the season as a free agent.
However, Arteta has impressed to Edwards that he has a future in London. The youngster has committed to Arsenal with a long term deal. The striker had already garnered interest from other Premier League clubs. Both Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion were tracking Edwards, Chelsea had even made an approach regarding the youngster. Bundesliga clubs were also very interested in signing the talented striker for themselves.
With Arsenal being successful in retaining Edwards, the future for the youngster is secured. The Gunners have an exciting prospect on their hands.
