According to the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, an agreement has been completed between Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag for the Dutchman to become the club’s new manager. This ends months of speculation that the Ajax coach would be making the trip to Old Trafford starting next season.
Romano’s tweet states: “Erik ten Hag to Manchester United, here we go! Agreement on contract now set to be completed. Mitchell van der Gaag, priority candidate for coaching staff…Ajax & Man United in contact to discuss €2m clause – announcement timing depends on this”.
Erik ten Hag Appointed as Manchester United Manager
Years of Footballing Knowledge
Erik ten Hag had a lengthy playing career as a central defender which spanned 13 years in the Dutch leagues. His time on the pitch ended in 2002 at FC Twente and it would be 10 years before ten Hag returned to football, this time in the dugout as manager of the Go Ahead Eagles. Ten Hag now has 10 years of experience as a manager under his belt having been the boss at four different clubs in this timeframe (Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II, Utrecht, Ajax).
Recent Success
While Erik ten Hag had relative success at both the Go Ahead Eagles and Utrecht, it was Ajax where he enjoyed his greatest spell as a manager. In 2019, he got the Dutch giants to the semi-finals of the Champions League, their first time reaching that stage since 1997. He also led the team to two Eredivisie title wins and two KNVB cup wins in that time. During his stay in Amsterdam, he has amassed an impressive winning percentage of 74%
A Tough Task Awaits
As Manchester United aim to refind their glory days once again, Ten Hag will have a tough task on his hands to turn around the fortunes of the club with a fanbase that is growing ever more impatient with each new appointment. However, he has the winning mentality and pedigree to get the job done if supported by the club.
