Barcelona legend who returned to the Camp Nou recently Dani Alves has not been registered in the Barcelona squad for the Europa League. Elsewhere, the future of Ousmane Dembele remains unclear, with Xavi having the final say on the Frenchman’s role in the rest of his side’s season.
Barcelona Squad Decision Made While Xavi Has Final Call on Immediate Ousmane Dembele Future
Dani Alves not Registered for the Europa League
Dani Alves has been excluded from the Barcelona team registered for the Europa League competition this campaign. According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are only allowed to register three new signings, and, having added four players to their ranks in the January transfer window, this left the Spanish side with a problem.
Manager Xavi brought in Alves along with Adama Traore, Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last month, but UEFA rules only allow three to be registered. Xavi chose to leave Alves out of the Europa League squad in favour of the other three new men.
Omitting Alves out of the squad is a surprising decision. The Spanish side now only have Sergino Dest as the sole right back in the squad. Alves will want to prove a point now, as he is bound to be disappointed.
Ousmane Dembele
The French winger is out of favour in Barcelona. Contract extension talks between the Spanish giants and Dembele have failed after Barcelona failed to offer him acceptable terms. It seems likely that Dembele will be left out of the squad for the remainder of the season, but the athletic reports that Xavi will have the final decision on the Frenchman’s role in his squad over the next few months.
His contract expires in the Summer, so the winger will leave, and as a result, Dembele is unlikely to play for Barcelona ever again.
