Liverpool has confirmed the signing of Colombian winger Luis Diaz from FC Porto in a deal worth £37.5 million.
The 25-year-old has signed a contract until 2027 with the Merseyside club. Diaz was Liverpool’s main transfer target in January as they looked to add further competition in the wide areas.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: “I could not be happier that we’ve been able to get this deal done and bring Luis to Liverpool.
“He is a player who is hungry for success and knows you have to fight to get what you want. He is a fighter, no doubt. He’s a skilful team player who has always the goal in mind.”
Diaz is currently on international duty with Colombia. He will join the squad next week ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with Cardiff City.
Liverpool Sign Luis Diaz From FC Porto
The lowdown on Colombian Winger
Luis Diaz joined FC Porto from Colombian club Atletico Junior in 2019. He quickly became one of the Portuguese side’s key players.
This season he has scored 14 goals and provided five assists in 18 league games, a very impressive return even considering Porto are currently top of the Primeira Liga.
He has made over 30 appearances for Colombia and was awarded the golden boot at the 2021 Copa America as joint top goalscorer alongside Lionel Messi.
Diaz will bring added firepower to Liverpool’s attack. However, he will face a battle to earn regular first-team football with competition coming from the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, and Roberto Firmino.
The Colombian international has electric pace and great dribbling ability and will be a handful for Premier League defenders. He looks like the perfect signing for Liverpool and will strengthen their title tilt as they look to hunt down Manchester City.
Luis Diaz said: “I’m very happy to sign for Liverpool,” via the club’s official Twitter account.
