Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka will not leave this window, according to Fabrizio Romano. Despite plenty of rumours emanating from Italy, the Swiss captain will stay in London.
Granit Xhaka Will Stay With Arsenal
AS Roma Are Keen to Sign Gunners Midfielder
Although Jose Mourinho is keen to bring the Swiss midfielder over to Italy, no talks are currently taking place. Roma sit sixth in Serie A, but have not made an approach for Xhaka. The 29-year-old is said to be the top target for the Italian club.
Xhaka’s season did not start the best, with a red card and a knee injury. However, the midfielder bounced back quickly, only to test positive for COVID and be sidelined again. But Xhaka is still on the wish list for Roma, with Mourinho rumoured to make another move in the summer.
Xhaka is under contract with the Gunners until 2024, so any deal will cost the buying side. Roma attempted to sign the midfielder last summer, but the deal collapsed. Xhaka’s agent denied that the Swiss wanted to leave Arsenal. However, if Roma persist, it may be difficult for the midfielder to resist. But, as Xhaka has two years left on the contract, the deal and personal terms would need to be impressive to encourage the move.
With seven midfielders on their books, Arsenal are in no rush to sell, and the Gunners have plenty of young talent too. Emile Smith-Rowe is coming of age and his loan spell with Championship side Huddersfield Town ensured the young midfielder gained valuable experience.
Xhaka is still wanted by the Gunners. With the competition in the position, the Swiss can be assured of game time. Roma will persist in trying to sign the Swiss player, however, it is more likely to make a bigger attempt in the summer window.
