Experienced Addition
Caldwell has made 84 Republic of Ireland appearances, scoring three goals. Caldwell is experienced across the globe in women’s football, though this will be her first taste of the Women’s Super League.
Manchester United have left their business late this transfer window but the addition of a centre-back has become imperative following an issue with Millie Turner.
On Sunday, before their 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, it was confirmed Turner’s absence was due to an issue with the artery in her neck – leaving her out for an indefinite period.
Lifelong Fan Diane Caldwell Excited to Join Manchester United
New signing Diane Caldwell told manutd.com: “Today is one of the most special moments in my life so far. As a lifelong United fan, it’s a dream to sign for the club and it’s a big moment for me and my family. I’m so grateful to be here and will wear the badge with so much pride.”
“The team are in great form, playing attractive football, and Marc is doing a fantastic job; I just can’t wait to meet everyone and get straight down to business on the pitch.”
United are in ruthless form, winning their last six games without conceding a single goal. The 1-0 win over Arsenal in the Conti Cup was particularly pleasing and earned them a semi-final tie with Chelsea.
The Tottenham game was set to be particularly difficult with United third and Spurs fourth, but it was a comfortable victory for the Red Devils.
United head coach Marc Skinner said: “Diane joins us as an experienced international defender who will really add to our back line during this second half of the season. She has great composure and versatility, and I have no doubt that she will be a fantastic asset to the team during her time here.
“Diane is also a great character, I always talk about having the right people in our environment, and she is the ultimate professional who possesses those important traits and leadership skills which will help continue to develop the incredible team spirit within this group.
“We are well looking forward to working with Diane.”
Caldwell has joined on a contract until the end of the current season.
