Newcastle United‘s Diego Carlos transfer plans have hit a major setback as they attempt to sign the Brazilian centre-back. Meanwhile, developments are quickly being made in their pursuit of Manchester United man Jesse Lingard.
Newcastle United Given Diego Carlos Transfer Blow
Looking to Make Defensive Additions
Eddie Howe is desperate to bolster his backline. The former Bournemouth boss has seen his side concede three or more goals on four occasions in his first ten games in charge at St James’ Park, and this is largely through no fault of his own. Instead, in moving to Newcastle, Howe inherited an extremely leaky backline, and it has proven to be as such over the past few months.
The Magpies’ first signing of this January transfer window, Kieran Trippier, will no doubt go some way towards helping to stop the flow of goals flying past first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, but the right-back’s services were no doubt secured with his attacking prowess in mind. Trippier’s crossing ability is second to none and will allow him to link up well with the likes of Chris Wood, Newcastle’s latest addition in what can be expected to be a hectic month in terms of their transfers.
Diego Carlos, however, would be the biggest signing so far under the new ownership for the Northern English club. That is if they pull it off.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies have seen their latest offer of €30 million in a guaranteed fee turned down by Sevilla. Although the deal is by no means off, it is clear that the Spanish side are searching for more financial compensation from Carlos’ wealthy suitors.
Newcastle will most likely be lining up other defensive targets in case they fail to land the Brazilian. They had to end their chase for Lille centre-back Sven Botman earlier this transfer window after the French club refused to let him leave mid-season.
Jesse Lingard Update
Despite previous reports suggesting that Newcastle considered a permanent move for Lingard a real possibility, it has now emerged that the player is not interested in such a deal and instead wants to keep his options open with his contract expiring this summer.
Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic has confirmed that the Magpies have submitted a second loan offer to the player and to Manchester United after their first was rejected. Whitwell also said that it is still very possible that the English attacker could remain at Old Trafford until his deal in Manchester runs out.
