There is a strong belief that Manchester United duo Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot will remain at the club during the January transfer window, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot To Stay at Manchester United
Lingard and Dalot to Fight for Places
Despite speculation about the two players, it seems like they will remain at Manchester United.
Diogo Dalot has been linked to a variety of clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, and AS Roma. The full-back enjoyed a successful spell at AC Milan last season before returning to the Red Devils. Since his return to United, the Portuguese has struggled to cement his position in the starting eleven. Predominantly a right wing-back, Dalot has shown his flexibility in the past by proving his effectiveness at left-back, right-back and even on the wing.
Following Manchester United’s poor run of form, Dalot has received his chance under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Dalot has started the last three league games since Rangnick’s arrival, proving that he is highly determined to succeed. Dalot’s Manchester United career seemed over under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; the Norwegian seemingly preferred picking Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Fabrizio Romano compared Diogo’s situation to teammate Donny Van De Beek, stating: ” He needs some confidence. In my opinion, it was a very similar situation to VDB, these kinds of players need to play. They need to show their skills and show how good they are.”
Now that Dalot’s United career is back on track, he will be looking to cement his position as a key player under Ralf Rangnick.
Jesse Lingard to Remain with Red Devils
Just like Dalot, Jesse Lingard spent last season on loan in hopes of recapturing his form. He joined West Ham United in January 2020 and was simply brilliant for the Hammers. The midfielder notched 9 goals and 5 assists in 16 games.
Following his successful loan spell, he returned to Manchester United and has remained with the club since July 2021. His chances would become limited due to the attacking options available to Rangnick, which includes Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Donny Van De Beek, and Mason Greenwood. His struggles have opened up the door for a move in January. Despite rumours, David Ornsein confirmed that Lingard was ‘preparing to stay’ in Manchester past the January transfer window.
Newcastle United were linked to the English midfielder however it seems like Jesse is determined to fight his way into Rangnick’s plans. A move to Newcastle would have made him an integral part of the Magpies’ squad however the reality of a relegation fight may be unattractive. Nevertheless, Lingard only has six months left on his contract which runs out in July 2022, meaning he will become a free agent.
Manchester United are not planning to offer Jesse a new contract, meaning that he would become a free agent at the end of the season.
Elsewhere at Manchester United, Anthony Martial has requested a transfer away, however ‘a permanent transfer is unlikely’, as per Samuel Luckhurst. Juan Mata has also been rumoured to leave in January as his contract finishes at the end of the season.
