Joao Cancelo Contract Talks on Manchester City Agenda
Right Fit
Having signed several full-backs, Pep Guardiola found the right fit in Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese defender can operate on either side, something City use to their advantage with Kyle Walker so strong on the right.
In 22 appearances this season, Cancelo has impressed with his level of performance and managed two goals and six assists.
He is approaching his 100th Manchester City appearance and has been capped by Portugal on 31 occasions too, scoring five goals.
Cancelo has scored six times for City, assisting 12 in total.
He arrived from Juventus in 2019 with Danilo, who it seems wasn’t quite right for Guardiola’s liking, going the other way in a player-plus-cash deal.
Cancelo’s current contract runs until June 2025, however, City look keen to reward him for his fine form and seek a further commitment from him.
Despite His Performance, Pep Guardiola Still Demands More
Pep Guardiola is one of the most demanding managers in world football, it’s where he gets his reputation from, it’s the key to his success. Whilst everyone was raving about Cancelo’s performances, Guardiola was keen to keep the full-back on his toes.
Guardiola is quoted by Manchester Evening News in November as saying: “Of course he’s playing really well, consistent – his physicality, he can recover well and quickly, can play every three days but I have the feeling he can do better. Hopefully, he can accept that and move forward”
Manchester City are well on course to fight it out for the Premier League title once again this campaign.
