Inter Milan Tie Down In-Demand Midfielder
Nicolo Barella’s stock has increased massively in recent months. His contribution to winning Euro 2020 with Italy and performances at club level have been eye-opening.
Barella has scored one and assisted six goals in his first eight Serie A games this season, having already contributed three goals and nine assists in 36 league appearances as the Nerazzurri lifted the title under Antonio Conte in 2020/21.
Now under the management of Simone Inzaghi, Barella has continued his good form and Inter have taken steps to ensure his future is with them.
Inter Milan said in a statement on the club website: “FC Internazionale Milano is delighted to announce that Nicolo Barella has signed a contract extension with this club. The 24-year-old midfielder’s new deal will run until 30 June 2026.”
Untouchable in the Summer
There were whispers of interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in Barella over the summer. However, that was played down by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, who stated that he was considered ‘untouchable’ by his club, who never opened talks with those reportedly interested parties.
Barella is so highly rated, Fabrizio Romano now reports Inter are considering him as the next club captain.
The midfielder, who was born in and started out at Cagliari, has lifted the Serie A title, Euro 2020 and been named in the Serie A Team of the Year twice (2018/19, 2019/20), Europa League Squad of the Season (2019/20) and is a 2021 Ballon d’Or nominee.
Inter Milan are in good form this campaign too, losing just one league game. They are in third place right now, seven points off top, also competing in the Champions League, where they are second in the group stages, two points behind Real Madrid.
