Addicks Boss Sacked After Dismal Start to Season
Adkins replaced Lee Bowyer in the hot-seat at The Valley in March 2021, almost two years after leaving Hull City.
Upon his arrival, he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, though has only managed to last seven months.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Charlton, who have won just one of their last eight League One games, losing eight of the 13 they have played in total this season.
Since taking over in March, following the resignation of now-Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer, Adkins had started his reign fairly well and there was hope for a bright future.
However, this season has damaged any sight of promotion for a team that many believe does not belong in the third tier of English football.
League One as Difficult as Ever
Few leagues are as wide open as League One and you can find yourself struggling near the bottom as quickly as you can find yourself reigning supreme at the top.
Charlton’s next opponents, Sunderland, know just how hard it is to get out of the league, but the Greenwich-based side were set to be faced with a battle to stay in it if things were allowed to keep going.
The Addicks’ next home game sees them welcome Doncaster Rovers, a side rock-bottom and struggling to get points on the board, as must-win a game as any for either side.
