Preston North End Confirmed the News on Monday Night

Preston North End announced Trevor Hemmings’ passing in a statement on Monday night.

The club said: “Preston North End Football Club can sadly confirm the devastating news that its owner Trevor Hemmings CVO has passed away this evening 11th October 2021.

“A further statement will be made in the coming days but in the meantime his family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.”

Hemmings was a director at Preston since the 1970s and he was responsible for saving the club from financial neglect in 2010. HM Revenue & Customs served them with a winding-up petition but Hemmings bought 51% of the club.

After five years of majority ownership in League One, Preston were promoted to the Championship in 2015

Hemmings was also a major part of the horse racing community, most noticeably winning three Grand Nationals as a racehorse owner.

Tributes Pour In

Numerous tributes immediately poured in from the football community. Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Derby County, Rochdale, Luton Town and Wigan Athletic offered their condolences alongside side heartwarming messages from fans of all clubs.

The English Football League also expressed their prayers to Preston. A spokesperson said: “We are saddened by the news of Trevor Hemmings’ passing and send our sincere condolences to all at Preston North End this evening. Rest in peace, Trevor.”

Former Liverpool defender and BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson joined the mourning. “Very sad news to hear of the passing of Trevor Hemmings,” he tweeted.

“He was Mr PNE. As former players, staff and supporters, we owe this man a huge debt of gratitude. Without him, who knows where our football club would be. RIP Sir & thanks for all you did for us. Love to the family.”

Preston North End police tweeted: “Thoughts & prayers are with the family & friends of Mr Hemmings this evening. A great man, whose impact & legacy in sport & beyond will live on forever #RIP”
