Exeter City have confirmed the loan signing of Padraig Amond. The striker will join the Devon club on a season-long loan from Newport County.

The 33-year-old was a regular starter for the South Wales side. Featuring in 206 games, scoring 59 goals, he has been part of two play-off finals during his time at Rodney Parade.

His most prolific season was during the 2018/19 campaign when he scored 14 league goals.

In that very season, he also scored five goals in seven FA Cup appearances. The former Grimsby Town player has scored against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Manchester City in recent seasons.

However, it now appears as if he is no longer part of manager Michael Flynn’s plans.

Amond was not named in County’s squad on the opening day of the season. The Exiles beat Oldham Athletic 1-0, thanks to a late Kevin Ellison goal.

It has been a busy summer window for the club. Several members of their play-off squad departing, a rebuild has been undertaken by Flynn, as the club aim to go one better this season and up into League One.

Tom King and Josh Sheehan were key members of the squad who departed this summer. King signed for fellow League Two side Salford City, whereas Sheehan joined newly-promoted League One side Bolton Wanderers.

County’s loss could prove to be City’s gain. Amond is no stranger to League Two, as he has spent the majority of his career in the fourth-tier of English football. The Grecians started their campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Bradford City.

It could be the experience and potential firepower from Amond that boosts their promotion hopes this season.
