Manchester City defender John Stones has signed a new five-year contract at the club, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The 27-year-old’s new deal is said to be worth around £250,000 per week and will keep the Englishman at the Etihad until 2026.

City are expected to officially announce the new shortly.

Details

Stones’ existing deal at City was set to expire at the end of this season, but talks have been ongoing since April regarding a new contract.

Ornstein reports that City set a deadline of the end of June for an agreement to be reached and negotiations concluded before the cut-off.

This new deal will see him earn around £13 million per season, which is in the same area as the likes of Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk.

Turnaround

Not so long ago, this would have been a very unlikely scenario in Stones’ career.

He had fallen out of favour at both City and with the England national team and looked to be on his way out.

However, he formed an excellent partnership with Ruben Dias during the 2020/21 season and kept Aymeric Laporte out of the side for the most part.

The defender made 35 appearances in all competitions last season as City won the Premier League and reached the final of the Champions League. In the time that he was on the pitch, Pep Guardiola’s side only conceded 12 goals.

City now believe that Stones is fulfilling the potential that was expected of him when he moved from Everton in 2016.

His form last season will likely put him in a starting spot for the upcoming campaign ahead of both Laporte and Nathan Ake.

In total, since joining City, Stones has made 168 appearances for the club, and has restored himself to the England squad in recent months.
