Promising Addition
For a 25-year-old, Martha Thomas has experienced a lot within the game. From spending her youth in the United States with Charlotte 49ers to a spell in France with Le Havre before returning to England with West Ham United in 2019.
With her contract expiring at West Ham, she has joined United – a club growing at a considerable pace. Though with Casey Stoney having resigned, seven first-team players having left the club and, including Martha Thomas, five new players in, it’s all change at Manchester United right now.
Former Birmingham City Women and Orlando Pride boss Marc Skinner is reportedly in line to replace Casey Stoney.
Thomas represents a promising addition to United. She has scored eight goals in her 26 FA Women’s Super League appearances to date. With United expected to be on top of things in the majority of their games, the window is open for her to add more goals to her game.
The striker, who will wear United’s number nine shirt in the coming season, represents Scotland at international level. She has scored four goals in eight games for her country.
Looking to Enjoy Her Football Again
Upon joining the Red Devils, Thomas told manutd.com: “I’m excited to be joining Manchester United, I’ve been impressed with the success the club has had over the last few years and that was a real drive for me to come here.
“I want to be enjoying my football again and I’m looking forward to challenging myself in this environment and being part of an attacking team where I can express myself.
“My focus right now is on settling in and putting in the hard work at training, but I can’t wait for the season to start and to see all the fans back in the stadium.”
Thomas will join fellow Scots Kirsty Smith and Kirsty Hanson at the club.
Manchester United football director John Murtough added: “We are delighted to have secured another fantastic signing in Martha. She is an exciting young striker who has shown her talent at both club and international level.
“Martha is a real threat in front of goal and will bolster our attack ahead of next season. We are looking forward to seeing her make her mark at United.”
