Sergio Aguero was hurt by the handling of his departure from Manchester City and did not speak to Pep Guardiola for a “couple of weeks” over the issue, according to Sam Lee of The Athletic.
Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero Went Weeks Without Speaking Over the Striker’s Exit
Guardiola’s Handling of the Exit Has Hurt Aguero
Manchester City revealed in April that Aguero would be leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires. Guardiola recently revealed Aguero is “close” to joining Barcelona on a free transfer.
The report highlighted that City’s all-time leading goalscorer was upset with the way his exit was handled and had a particular problem with Guardiola – who decided Aguero would leave.
The Argentine came off the bench to score twice in Manchester City’s 5-0 victory over Everton on the final day of the Premier League season. The 32-year-old bagged a brace to break the record of most Premier League goals (184) scored for one club.
Guardiola broke down into tears over Aguero’s exit when speaking to Sky Sports after City’s final Premier League game on Sunday. His emotional response could have been related to the reported unease between the pair over the handling of the exit.
Aguero Showed Why He Will Have a Statue
Aguero supposedly put aside his unease with Guardiola and his exit to perform in the final weeks of the season. On Sunday he reminded us why he is considered a Premier League great. His interview after his final Etihad appearance reaffirmed the belief about his humble character.
He also demonstrated to Guardiola that he is worth an appearance for what could be his final ever match in a Manchester City shirt when they play Chelsea this Saturday in the Champions League final.
After joining the club from Atletico Madrid ten years ago, Aguero came off the bench to score a phenomenal brace in his Etihad and Manchester City debut. His final home appearance for the club went the same way and is utterly fitting.
