Manchester United Tracking Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves

Pedro Goncalves

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves according to The Telegraph, as Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side continue to look for a right-winger.

Scoring 15 times this season in 22 appearances, the Portuguese winger has attracted the attention of the Red Devils who continue to look for someone to fill the right-wing void. With negotiations at a cross-roads with Borussia Dortmund over Jadon Sancho, Manchester United’s new recruitment team are keeping tabs on Goncalves who they see as a viable option for half the price.

Goncalves’ current contract contains a release clause of £51.7 million, which is worth less than half of Dortmund’s asking price of £108 million for Sancho.

The 22-year old was bought by Lisbon to replace the now Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes in the summer and has quickly become an integral member of the squad. Playing in a more central attacking position, Goncalves is versatile and able to play on either wing too which will fit under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

The Portuguese international has also scored nine more goals than the England international and has seen Sporting Lisbon’s charge towards their first league title in 19 years accelerate significantly.

The Telegraph understands that new Football Director John Mourtough is keeping tabs on the situation as United look for viable alternatives to Sancho but any final say on deals is left to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Competition From Europe’s Elite

Since selling Fernandes to United, the form of Goncalves has helped Sporting reach bigger heights than before.

Goncalves may return to England a bigger and better player after struggling during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Under Nuno Espirito Santo, he made one Carabao Cup appearance before leaving for Famalicao in 2019.

Having bought him for as little as £5.85 million last summer, the Portuguese club could be on the verge of another big payday with United. Sporting have sold Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Marcos Rojo and Fernandes to the Red Devils in the past.

But Solksjaer’s side will need to move fast for the 22-year old with a host of European’s top clubs reportedly tracking the player.
