In a United career ravaged with injury and inconsistency, the defender signed in 2014 under Louis van Gaal after performing well at the World Cup going all the way to the final. He signed after the World Cup from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of £16 million.
Boca Juniors are set to have beaten competition from Newcastle United and Sheffield United to allow the return of Rojo to South America and link up with former teammate Carlos Tevez.
Rojo, who spent last season at boyhood club Estudiantes, struggled for game time under Solskjaer’s tenure; being limited to 45 minutes for the U23s.
During his pre-match press conference, Solskjaer had confirmed the news of Rojo’s departure: “likely that Marcos goes back to Argentina, a little bit of paperwork left to be done.”

Having fallen down the pecking order, numerous English clubs had been interested in signing the defender but for wages to become a stumbling block. Since his ascension into the hot seat, the Norwegian manager has opted to rely on youth with the likes of Axel Tuanzebe given opportunities such as the victory in the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
The 30-year defender, who can play at both centre-back and left-back made nine appearances last season before the coronavirus pandemic hit. His last appearance in a United shirt came in the 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in November of 2019.
Rojo becomes the latest player to leave Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to trim down his squad. Jesse Lingard completed his move to West Ham United on loan until the end of the season, while Odion Ighalo returned to parent club Shanghai Shenhua after his loan expired.
