West Ham United defender Aji Alese has joined Cambridge United on loan for the rest of the season.
The U’s have been chasing defensive reinforcements following the loss of key defenders throughout this transfer window.
Alese is the second deadline day signing for Mark Bonner following the capture of Declan Drysdale.
Cambridge United Sign Defender Aji Alese on Loan From West Ham United
Alese Gearing Up for His Second Football League Loan Spell
The talented defender has been a regular for the West Ham U23s for several seasons. He is highly thought of at the London Stadium but needs game time to further enhance his development. He has made one senior appearance for the Hammers, which came in a cup tie with Hull City.
Alese had a loan spell at Accrington Stanley last season, making ten appearances for them before the season was curtailed. He joins a Cambridge side enjoying an excellent 2021 and sitting pretty at the top of League Two.
Mark Bonner has been searching for defensive recruits following the departures of Robbie Cundy and Harry Darling. Drysdale was confirmed earlier today and now Alese arrives as the U’s strengthen their promotion bid.
He could make his Cambridge debut against Barrow this weekend.
Mark Bonner Pleased With Latest Recruit
Speaking to the Cambridge website about his new signing, Bonner said: “Aji has some good experience of League football from his previous loan at Accrington Stanley and is well thought of at West Ham. He is left-sided, has good quality with the ball and is a strong athlete, which makes him a nice addition to the squad.
“Much like Declan and Jubril, Aji has an opportunity to work for a place in the team whilst adding to our culture. This completes our business in the January window and with the competitive squad we have built, we can now focus on the months ahead and building on the progress we have made so far.”
