Oxford United have signed Blackburn Rovers defender Joe Grayson. The 21-year-old becomes the U’s second signing of the window.
Oxford United Sign Joe Grayson From Blackburn Rovers
Second Signing of the Window
Joe Grayson has become Karl Robinson’s second signing of the January transfer window after Luke McNally arrived from St Patrick’s Athletic.
Like McNally, Grayson is a left-sided centre back that can also cover at left-back. Given that Jordan Obita has recently departed for Wycombe Wanderers, finding cover for Josh Ruffels seemed a priority and it appears the U’s have found it.
According to Rich Sharpe of the Lancashire Telegraph, the U’s were interested in the 21-year-old earlier in the window.
Joe Grayson
Joe Grayson has made eight appearances for Rovers in Premier League 2 this season. The young defender has turned out 60 times for the academy side.
At senior level, however, he has managed just two Blackburn appearances but played the full 90 minutes in Carabao Cup games against Lincoln City and Oldham Athletic.
The defender also spent time on loan at Grimsby Town in League Two, where he made eight appearances and scored twice.
What Was Said
U’s boss Karl Robinson told the clubs’ official website: “I’ve known about Joe for a long time and I want to thank Blackburn for their help because they have been excellent with us.
“He has a very good left foot and covers us at left-back, left-sided centre-half or in a holding role in midfield. I even saw him play left wing on loan at Grimsby but I don’t think that’s really his best position.
“It’s a good signing for us and with Joe at 21, Luke McNally the same age, Rob Atkinson 22, Elliott Moore 23 and Nico Jones just 18 we have five very talented young players able to play on that left side of defence. That’s exciting and we look forward to seeing how they all develop.”
