Experienced goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler has joined Huddersfield Town on a short term deal until the end of the season.
The goalkeeper will provide backup to current number one Ryan Schofield. He has been training with the club since leaving Fleetwood Town earlier this month.
The Canadian international is Huddersfield’s fourth signing in this transfer window.
Experienced Goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler Joins Huddersfield Town
Leutwiler Joins After Making 18 Appearances for Fleetwood Town
The goalkeeper has been in English football for the past eight seasons. He started in England at Middlesbrough before a move to Shrewsbury Town kick-started his career.
He made 118 league appearances in three seasons for the Shrews. His impressive performances earned him a move to Blackburn Rovers. However, he made just six league appearances for Tony Mowbray’s side before being released at the end of last season.
His most recent club was Fleetwood Town where he spent the first half of this season. He made 18 appearances for the Cod Army before leaving the club earlier this month. Since his exit from Fleetwood, the keeper has been training with Huddersfield in hopes of earning a contract.
That is what he has done and will provide much-needed competition in goal. Carlos Corberan has chopped and changed his goalkeepers this season, whether that be due to injuries or departures. Leutwiler replaces Ben Hamer who left for Swansea City earlier this month.
Leutwiler will compete with Ryan Schofield for the number one spot. Schofield has been first choice in recent weeks. But now has fierce competition behind me which will please Carlos Corberan.
Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby Explains Desire to Add a Third Goalkeeper
Speaking to the Huddersfield Town website about their new signing, Leigh Bromby said: “With Ben Hamer departing earlier this month, we had a desire to add a third senior goalkeeper to the group to ensure we have the right level of competition and depth between now and the end of the season.
“Jayson arrives at the Club with good experience and having played regularly in League One during the first half of the season. It’s his job to show us what he can do every day and to push Ryan Schofield, the current incumbent of the number one shirt.”
