Derby County have signed Rangers defender George Edmundson on loan for the rest of the season.
Edmundson arrives in search of game time at Pride Park. He will be one of Wayne Rooney’s first signings as a manager.
Edmundson has played just once in the Scottish Premiership this season.
Derby County Sign George Edmundson on Loan from Rangers
Edmundson Has Played Just 15 Minutes of League Football This Season
Predominately a centre back, Edmundson is a versatile defender who can also operate at full-back. He was signed by Steven Gerrard and the Rangers boss still fancies the defender.
However, his game time has been limited in what has been a sensational season for Rangers. Edmundson has played just 15 minutes in the Scottish Premiership this season. At 23, he wants to be playing regularly and a move to the East Midlands offers that opportunity.
The defender began his career at Oldham Athletic. He made 65 league appearances for the Latics before moving to Rangers in 2019. Edmundson was seen as one of the brightest prospects during his time at Boundary Park.
Defensive Reinforcements at Derby
Edmundson is joining a Derby side improving under Wayne Rooney. The Rams are motoring nicely away from relegation trouble having won their last three league games. Edmundson’s arrival provides more competition at the back and he will have to fight for his place in what has been a settled defence since Rooney took over.
The Rams are efficient as well as hard to beat. Three clean sheets to go with their three wins. Edmundson joins a side on the up and will be confident he can make a positive impression on the team.
If he signed in time, he could make his Derby debut in Tuesday’s crucial clash with Rotherham United. If not, he will be eligible for their trip to Barnsley next weekend.
