Orlando City striker Daryl Dike has joined Barnsley on loan for the rest of the season. The deal includes an option to buy should the striker impress.
The 20-year-old has been prolific in the MLS, scoring eight times in 17 matches during the 2020 season.
He is Barnsley’s third signing in this transfer window as Valerien Ismael looks to bolster his attack for a busy second half of the season.
Barnsley Sign Young Striker Daryl Dike on Loan from Orlando City
Dike Ready to Test Himself in English Football
The teenage striker has been a breakout star in the MLS scoring all kinds of goals for Orlando City. He had an impressive 2020 in what a disruptive year for the league. Eight goals and two assists in 17 matches is impressive for any player.
He now hopes to carry those qualities into a new country and new league. The Championship takes no prisoners and he will learn the difficulties that the league presents. However, he has plenty of talent and all the attributes needed to succeed in a vibrant, young Barnsley side.
The Tykes are having a great season, a huge contrast to last campaign’s struggles. They look like genuine promotion contenders but need to get back to winning ways. Ismael’s side have not emerged victorious from any of their last five games – their longest streak since the French manager took over in October.
Dike could make his Barnsley debut against Derby County next weekend.
Chief Executive Dane Murphy Pleased With Barnsley’s Newest Addition
Speaking to the Barnsley website about the club’s new signing, Chief Executive Dane Murphy said: “Most of the club’s work was completed early in this window, but we’re ecstatic to get a player of Daryl’s calibre into the squad.
“He has had a rapid rise in his career over the last two years showing he possesses a tonne of talent. The club believe he will undoubtedly prove a real asset between now and May.
“It has been well documented that Valérien wanted to strengthen his forward line and in the short-term, this addition goes someway to accomplish that.
“I must thank the group at Orlando City for allowing Daryl to join us and I have no doubt that he will be a success at Oakwell.”
