Stefan Payne Completes Grimsby Town Move
Hurst and Payne Re-United Once Again at Grimsby Town
Payne is a player that manager Hurst knows from Shrewsbury Town, proving to be a key factor when deciding to bring the 29-year-old in. He also knows the Football League very well and has played Championship football with Barnsley. His other clubs include Fulham, Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury – a spell where he was acquainted with Hurst.
His most recent time with Tranmere Rovers, only saw Payne make 18 appearances in an injury-hit spell with the Wirral club, scoring just five goals in that time. But, the 29-year-old is now returning to full fitness and is back playing under a manager who will trust him more and will look to integrate him into the starting side from the onset.
What Was Said?
Speaking to the Grimsby Town website, Paul Hurst said: “There’s no getting away from the fact that we’ve been on the lookout for a centre forward. He has just come back from a long term injury, but he looks in pretty good shape. After speaking to him, he is keen to get involved.
“He’s got a little bit of everything. He’s a strong player, he’s quick and he’s certainly got a little bit of edge to him. We had a successful time with him, hence the reason for getting him here and we fought off a bit of competition to get him.
“I’m hoping that he can give everyone a boost within the group. Hopefully, we can get him fit and firing and get us some goals.”
