The recent transfer of Robert Snodgrass from West Ham United to West Bromwich Albion is to face a Premier League investigation.
Premier League Will Investigate Transfer of Snodgrass to West Bromwich Albion
Comments From Baggies Boss Sam Allardyce Spark Fury
Snodgrass was left out of the West Brom side during their 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, with manager Sam Allardyce telling BT Sport it was down to an “agreement” made between the two sides.
Allardyce suggested in his pre-match interview that: “an agreement between the clubs that this game he would not be allowed to play.”
“We could only get the deal done with that agreement”, explained Allardyce.
Transfer Could be in Breach of Premier League Rules
The transfer may have breached Premier League rules, explained to all clubs in its handbook for the 2020/21 season.
Rule 17 states: “No club shall enter into a contract which enables any other party to that contract to acquire the ability materially to influence its policies or the performance of its teams in League Matches.”
Allardyce’s comments implied with the alleged agreement that West Ham officials had influenced the West Brom team-selection, however, reports suggest it was never committed to writing.
Potential punishments from the Premier League could include fines or points deductions.
Snodgrass First Allardyce Signing
Snodgrass swapped the London Stadium for the Hawthorns earlier this month for an undisclosed fee. The 33-year-old has made just one appearance for the Baggies since his arrival. That came during the 3-2 win over Black Country derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The ex-Scottish international joined up with Allardyce in an attempt to save West Brom from an immediate return to the Championship.
West Brom currently sit in 19th position, five points adrift of their closest rivals having played two games more.
