La Liga outfit Sevilla have confirmed that manager Julen Lopetegui has extended his stay at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán until the summer of 2024. His previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2022.
The 54-year-old joined the club from in June 2019 after being dismissed by Real Madrid in October 2018. Since taking charge of Los Nervionenses, Lopetegui has guided the club to their sixth UEFA Europa League triumph, beating Inter Milan in last seasons final in just his first season in charge.
On top of the Europa League success, Lopetegui also guided the Andalusian club to qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
The deal will be welcome news as the club look to push into a European position in the league. Currently, his side sit sixth in La Liga but have games in hand on the sides above.
100 Points for Lopetegui at Sevilla
Following their 3-2 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, Lopetegui reached 100 points since taking over. During his time at the club, the former Madrid manager has an impressive record with 46 wins from 79 official matches.
Lopetegui has suffered just 14 defeats during that time, too, and has an impressive win percentage as a result. Since his arrival, the Basque manager is unbeaten in 82 per cent of the games he has managed.
Lopetegui Delighted With New Deal
“It is a huge motivation,” said Lopetegui about his new deal. “We want Sevilla to be even bigger. It will take a lot of work to make the dream of Sevilla’s fans a reality.”
It’s been a major turnaround for Lopetegui who, before taking the reigns at Sevilla, was sacked as the head coach of the Spanish national side and manager of Real Madrid within the space of five months.
