Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri has tested positive for COVID-19, the agency that represents him, Equipo TMA, has confirmed.
The announcement comes just hours before what was potentially going to be his first-team debut v Watford in the FA Cup.
Facundo Pellistri Tests Positive for COVID-19
Headed for Potential Debut
Since the 19-year-old winger arrived at Old Trafford, there has been much anticipation to see him in United red. However, the club have persisted with the patient approach and kept him within the U23 squad for the most part. He has had his first taste of English football at senior level through the EFL Trophy – scoring in a 3-2 loss to Accrington Stanley on December 8, 2020.
Pellistri is no stranger to senior football either, having reached that level for Penarol but, understandably, Manchester United have been reluctant to throw him straight in within a new environment and style of football.
The Uruguayan forward has took the patience in his stride and enjoyed taunting the defenders of his own age group.
Pellistri has shown glimpses at the level and will, of course, be waiting to feature in the Premier League.
There was some anticipation though that he might feature v Watford on January 9, 2021. With this, the first real opportunity for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to introduce Pellistri, even if it was from the bench.
It’s a shame for the young winger, though it looks like he will be unavailable for selection in the immediate future.
Equipo TMA Statement
Equipo TMA said in a statement on social media: “We would like to inform you that Facundo Pellistri, a Manchester United player and member of the TMA team tested positive for COVID-19.
“He is doing the corresponding quarantine at home, without symptoms and complying with the physical care indicated by his club.
“We appreciate the messages received in the last hours. Soon he will be training again with his teammates.”
Unclear as to Where This Leaves Saturday Night’s Fixture
It’s unclear where Saturday night’s game stands right now, it’s likely further updates will come in due course. The youngster had reportedly been training with the first-team and there lies a question as to when he tested positive and whether his teammates will bring back negative results ahead of the game.
Shrewsbury Town have already been forced to inform The FA that they will be unable to fulfill their third-round tie with Southampton. Though, the likes of Aston Villa and Derby County look set to field U23 sides after closing their training grounds.
