Rhys Bennett Extends Carlisle United Contract

League Two leaders Carlisle United have confirmed that defender Rhys Bennett has extended his contract until the end of the current season. The 29-year-old joined the club in November and, in his 13 appearances, Chris Beech’s side have moved up the table and currently lead the way in the fourth division.

Beech ‘Delighted’ to Keep Bennett

Bennett’s arrival late last year coincided with a brilliant run of form for Carlisle. The Cumbrians lead the way by a point and have lost just once in their last five matches under Beech.

Speaking to the club website about Bennett’s extension, the boss said: “I’m sure this is one of the signings we make in January that will really please our supporters.

“It’s one I’m delighted to get done and it goes without saying that the football club worked incredibly hard to make this happen, and support it.”

“Rhys hit the ground running when he came in. We dropped him straight into our first team environment with him having done limited pre-season work and having had no games of football since February of last year. As we all saw he did ever so well.”

Striker Moves On

Carlisle have also confirmed that striker Gav Reilly has left the club by mutual consent. It is thought that he will make a move back to Scotland.

Reilly joined the Blues in the summer but only managed one goal in 21 appearances.

Manager Beech said: “Unfortunately things didn’t quite drop for him the way we’d have all liked them to have done, and Gav is the type of player that is mindful of his future career as well as the here and now.

“An opportunity presented itself to allow him to go into an environment where he’s consistently done well and scored goals, and by doing the same again he will set himself into a good position for future seasons.
