Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has called for the club to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.
Speaking after his sides 1-0 win over Huesca on Sunday, the 57-year-old has criticised the lack of finishing from his side.
Barcelona Boss Ronald Koeman Looking to Sign a Striker
Koeman Says Barcelona ‘Need Someone at the Top to Have More Competition and More Goals’
Despite only winning 1-0 against bottom club Huesca in La Liga, Koeman’s side had just seven shots on target from 20 goal attempts.
Captain Lionel Messi returned from an ankle injury and started alongside Martin Braithwaite and Ousmane Dembele in attack, and the trio provided 15 attempts on goal.
Late on, the former Everton boss introduced Antoine Griezmann to finish the game off, but it was midfielder Frenkie de Jong that scored the games only goal after 27 minutes.
Although his side created several goalscoring opportunities, finding the back of the net seemed problematic. Despite the low scoreline, Barca have scored the most goals in La Liga this season but it hasn’t stopped the Dutch manager from wanting to recruit during this transfer window.
What Was Said
Speaking after his side’s victory, Koeman told reporters: “I trust each player in our squad. But if we choose to have three midfielders there is room for three forwards.
“With Leo, we bet on someone with great depth like Dembele, and we have to choose between Martin or Antoine at the top and Martin has done it.
“It’s a nine that we’re missing in these games but it doesn’t mean anything in regards to Antoine’s substitution. We have a lot of games and we need all the players.
“We have said several times, at the beginning of the season, that we need someone at the top to have more competition and more goals, more effectiveness, but this depends on many things.”
Barcelona Need a Striker
Despite boasting arguably the greatest player in works football in Lionel Messi, Barcelona are lacking a number nine. Messi can play anywhere in a front three, as is the case with Demebele and Griezmann, but Koeman doesn’t have a focal point in his attack.
Braithwaite has scored just two league goals from 13 outings this season, with his tally at just six from 28 appearances in all competitions.
