REPORT: Newcastle United in Loan Move for Fikayo Tomori

Newcastle United are looking to bring in a defender during the January transfer window and Chelsea man Fikayo Tomori has been offered by the Blues, according to Lee Ryder of the Newcastle Chronicle.

Magpies Need Defensive Reinforcements

In a season where there have been goals aplenty in the Premier League, Newcastle are a side that have failed to impress at either end of the pitch.

Steve Bruce’s side have conceded 24 goals in the league this season, with just five teams having conceded more. And it’s a similar story up front with the Magpies finding the net 17 times, with only four teams scoring fewer.

To help with the defensive unit, Bruce has looked at Chelsea’s Tomori and Manchester United’s Brandon Williams, as per Ryder’s report.

The 23-year-old has managed just three appearances for Frank Lampard’s side this season but the centre back, who can also cover at full-back, impressed last season where he made 22 appearances.

Similarly to Williams, a loan move would suit both parties. A lack of game time, largely due to the signing of Thiago Silva and improvement of both Kurt Zouma and Reece James, has frustrated the Chelsea man and he has the ability to slot straight into the Magpies defence.

Loan Move

Newcastle are only able to loan two players from other Premier League sides. In defence, Bruce is left with a choice between Williams and Tomori, while the Magpies have also been linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder, Hamza Choudhury.

If Tomori does join Newcastle on loan, the north-east club should know what to expect. The 23-year-old has impressed with previous loan spells at Hull City and Derby County respectively.

It was during his time under Lampard with the Rams that the young defender showcased what he is all about. He made 55 appearances in all competitions as Derby reached the Championship playoff final, only to be beaten by Aston Villa.
