If 2020 was a year of success for Union Berlin, then the club have kicked off 2021 in a similar manner. Die Eisernen picked up all three points in their first game of the new year with a 2-0 win on the road at Werder Bremen, a result which has moved the club up to fourth in the Bundesliga.
Union Berlin Start 2021 Brightly With Win at Werder Bremen
Away Win and Fourth in the Bundesliga
Union headed to Bremen off the back of a disappointing DFB-Pokal defeat against lower league opposition. Despite the blip in form, Urs Fischer’s side had picked up five points from three tricky fixtures before the cup game.
Ahead of the trip to Bremen, Union would have felt confident. Die Eisernen secured a 2-0 win at Weserstadion last season and started the day seven points better off than their opponents.
Like we saw in recent games against Bayern Munich, Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund, Union started the game quickly. So quick, in fact, that the visitors were two goals ahead inside half an hour.
Sheraldo Becker, a winger that has already made as many Bundesliga appearances this season as he did in the entire previous campaign, opened the scoring after just 12 minutes with his second goal for the club. Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi netted his fifth goal from his last seven outings 30 minutes into the game.
Upcoming Fixtures for Union Berlin in 2021
Although Union are occupying a Champions League spot, the club are fully aware there are no easy games in the German top flight.
Fischer’s side continue 2021 with the visit of Wolfsburg who, at the time of writing, are level on points but behind Union on goal difference.
Union Berlin then welcome Bayer Leverkusen before a trip to Leipzig. All three sides are around Die Eisernen in the league table so it will be interesting to see how the club fare when facing fellow in-form sides on a more regular basis.
