Wolverhampton Wanderers could turn to Spanish striker Diego Costa to replace the injured Raul Jimenez, according to The Times. The 32-year-old is now a free agent after his contract with Atletico Madrid was terminated by mutual consent.
Without Jimenez, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has only 18-year-old Fabio Silva to turn to up front, and is in desperate need of backup. The busy fixture list means Wolves will need to rotate their squad. The Times have reported that Costa is an option to boost their attack.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Eyeing Diego Costa
Costa a Proven Talent
Costa fell out of favour at Atletico after the arrival of Luis Suarez. The Spaniard had only scored 19 goals in 81 appearances since his return to Atleti in 2018.
His time in England was much more successful, scoring 52 goals in just 89 games, and winning the Premier League on two occasions.
Costa, although a Spanish international, was born and raised in Brazil. With the plethora of Portuguese players and staff at Wolves, a language barrier would not be a problem.
Lack of Goals a Worry for Wolves
The importance of Raul Jimenez to Wolves is evident in the lack of goals they have scored since his injury. Although Fabio Silva looks like a promising talent, he is still raw, needing experience to improve his game. Silva could learn from Costa’s know-how, and this would certainly aid in the young striker’s development.
Costa would provide an edge to the Wolves attack, who have looked toothless at times without their star man, Jimenez. They have only scored 15 goals so far this season, with just four teams scoring less. They currently sit 12th in the league table.
A proven Premier League goal-scorer such as Costa could be what Wolves need to ease the workload of the other forwards, while adding a quality that could see them propelled up the table.
