The Premier League has confirmed that 18 tests have been returned as positive among the latest round of Coronavirus testing at its club’s.
18 New Positive Coronavirus Tests at Premier League Clubs
Highest Total to Date
The 18 recorded in the latest round of testing is the highest number to date.
Between December 21 and December 27, 1,497 players and club staff at all Premier League sides were tested for Coronavirus. This is down slightly from the previous round, of which only seven people returned positive tests.
The previous record high was 16, which came in round 11, between November 9 and November 15.
A statement on the Premier League website read: “The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 21 December and Sunday 27 December, 1,479 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19.
“Of these, there were 18 new positive tests.
“Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.
“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
As a result, this is a huge cause of concern for the Premier League, as cases continue to rise across the country. 41, 385 cases were reported in the United Kingdom on December 28.
Several clubs have reported cases throughout this season, but they have been isolated incidence, allowing them to continue playing games. However, Newcastle United were the first to see a league game postponed due to the virus earlier this month. Manchester City then joined the Magpies yesterday, after several of their staff have tested positive for the virus.
The situation appears to be worse in the EFL. Several clubs have reported positive cases over the Christmas period.
However, currently, the Premier League and EFL plan to continue playing through the current restrictions.
