Bayer Leverkusen have extended the contract of their rising star Florian Wirtz, as confirmed in an official announcement by the club on Wednesday. The contract extension will see Wirtz stay on the books at the German club through the 2022/23 season. At just 17-years-old, the attacking midfielder has already made over 25 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen.

Wirtz made his first appearance for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga at the age of just 16. Since then, he has gone on to make regular appearances in the German top flight. Last season Wirtz became the second-youngest goalscorer in the history of the Bundesliga when he scored against Bayern Munich. He held this record up until recently when Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko scored against Union Berlin on matchday 13 of the current Bundesliga season.
The goals haven’t stopped coming from Wirtz since his historic goal against Bayern Munich. In the current campaign, the German teenager has scored two goals and registered four assists in 12 Bundesliga appearances. He was also impactful during the Europa League group stage with two goals and one assist in five appearances. These are very impressive numbers so far this season from the 17-year-old and there are likely to be many more goals and assists to come.
When it comes to goal and shot creation, Wirtz is one of the main players Leverkusen turns to. According to Football Reference, Wirtz currently ranks second on the team in shot-creation and third in goal-creating actions. He is eighth in the Bundesliga in key passes and sixth in players dribbled past.

Leverkusen’s development of Kai Havertz and his eventual move to Chelsea certainly shows the club are capable of producing elite talent. Wirtz appears he’s on the path to becoming the next star player to emerge from the club.
