Carabao Cup Final Moved From February to April

The final of this season’s Carabao Cup has been rescheduled. The original date for the showdown at Wembley Stadium was on Sunday, February 28, but the EFL have moved the fixture to Sunday, April 25.

The reason behind the move is to have more fans in attendance. At the moment, London and the South East are in Tier 4 under government restrictions but the Football League are hopeful that fans will be able to attend the fixture at a later date.

EFL Confirm Carabao Cup Final Moved From February to April

Fans in Attendance

In a statement made on Monday afternoon, the EFL said: “It is the objective of the League to stage the Final with as many supporters in attendance as possible and the decision has therefore been taken to move the Final from its original date of Sunday 28 February 2021 to later in the year.

“The number of fans permitted will be dependent on Government guidance in place at the time and it is hoped that moving the date to later in the year will give Clubs and their fans the best opportunity to attend in person.

“The competition is set to continue this week, with the Quarter-Finals to be played across Tuesday 22 December and Wednesday 23 December.”

Upcoming Fixtures and Previous Winners in the Carabao Cup Final

Championship side Brentford welcome Premier League outfit Newcastle United and Arsenal host holders Manchester City on Tuesday evening in the quarter-final stage.

On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur travel to Stoke City while Everton welcome Manchester United.

Holders Manchester City will be looking to reach their fourth successive final, having won the previous three, and will be looking to add to the seven times they have already won the competition. Five-time winners Manchester United last reached the Wembley showdown in 2017 when they won in the final against Southampton.

The current FA Cup holders Arsenal will be looking to progress in this competition following their poor start to the league. Their last final appearance came in a 3-0 defeat against the Citizens in 2018.

The last time Spurs reached the final was in 2015 when they lost to Chelsea, but they have won the competition on four occasions. Everton’s most recent final came during a defeat to Liverpool in 1984, and they also fell at the last hurdle in 1977.

Newcastle lost out to Manchester City in the 1976 final but Stoke were victorious in 1972 with a win over Chelsea.

Brentford are the only side left in the competition yet to reach the final.
