Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised defender Joel Matip today and claims he is an ‘incredible’ footballer that is now entering ‘the best football age.’
Jurgen Klopp Praises Defender Joel Matip
Injury Crisis for Jurgen Klopp
The Reds boss is currently struggling for players on the defensive side of the ball, with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez nursing injuries – and that’s just the centre-backs.
It means that Matip will be one of the club’s only remaining regular starting centre-backs going into the game against Leicester City.
Klopp: “Unbelievable How Good He is”
Klopp though is glad to have the 29-year old available to him. Speaking about the player, he said: “Joel, since he was with us, he is incredible.
“He was incredible before, that’s why we signed him. He is an incredible football player, it’s unbelievable how good he is.
“Yes, he was unlucky with injuries. Before he arrived here he had no injuries, played for Schalke pretty much through four, five or six years.
“If he is in the best moment of his career, I don’t know, but I was really happy with the moment of his career he was in for the last four years. Super player.”
Nearly 100 Games for the Reds
Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 and has been at Anfield getting regular game time ever since. He has played close to 100 games for the Reds (he currently sits on 88 appearances for the club) and of course played a key part as Liverpool won their first-ever Premier League title.
Time in the Bundesliga
Before his time in England, he spent seven seasons in Germany with Schalke 04, making his debut as a 17-year old. During his time there, he played nearly 200 games for the Bundesliga side and even had 25 goal contributions along the way.
When Liverpool realised they could snap the defender up on a free transfer, they duly obliged and he’s been arguably one of the league’s most solid players ever since.
