Bayer Leverkusen have continued their strong start to the 2020/21 season as they remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga. The German club are emerging as an outside contender to challenge for the title. After their victory over Arminia Bielefeld, Leverkusen are now third in the table.
Bayer Leverkusen Remain Unbeaten in the Bundesliga
Consecutive Victories Propel Leverkusen Up the Table
Leverkusen began the season with three consecutive draws. Since then, they have gone on to win five consecutive matches to surge up the Bundesliga table. One of those victories was a key result against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday seven when Leverkusen won 4-3. Mönchengladbach finished one spot ahead of Leverkusen last season and to get all three points against a top Bundesliga side was a massive result. Thus far, Leverkusen have taken at least a point away from matches against RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg as well. These results could prove to be vital at the end of the season.
This consistent run of form should put the rest of the German top flight on notice that Leverkusen are proving to be a legitimate contender for the UEFA Champions League places. After finishing just two points outside the top four in the 2019/20 campaign, they are on the path to avoiding missing out on Champions League football next season. Depending on how results go for other clubs vying for the top four, Leverkusen may remain in the hunt for the title up until the final weeks of the season.
Lucas Alario Continues to Impress
One of the key contributors to Leverkusen’s strong run of form has been forward Lucas Alario. The 28-year-old Argentine has been in terrific form with seven goals in seven appearances so far this season. He has recorded three two-goal performances which included a brace in the victory against Mönchengladbach. Alario has certainly contributed to the early-season success Leverkusen has had.
Without Patrik Schick available since the beginning of October due to injury, Leverkusen turned to Alario for their main source of goals. Now that Schick has returned it will be interesting to see who manager Peter Bosz goes with in the starting lineup moving forward. For the time being, Alario’s great form should see him continue to make regular appearances in the starting striker role but Schick is also capable of producing goals on a consistent basis. This is a good problem for Leverkusen to have as they possess two players capable of scoring lots of goals this season.
