Important Part of the Squad

Despite still being on the periphery of the first-team squad, Marcelo Bielsa clearly rates Struijk highly and has decided to keep him as one for the future.

The 21-year-old made a big impression on the Leeds boss towards the end of the 2019/20 season. With Bielsa’s side having already sealed promotion, the Dutchman was handed his full debut as they travelled to Derby County. After an excellent display, he kept his place in the side to face Charlton Athletic on the last day of the season.

While he was not expected to be one of the first names on the teamsheet this season, Struijk was forced to start at centre-back in Leeds’ 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening day of the season. Despite conceding four times, the Dutchman put in a strong defensive display, making four tackles and completing 11 clearances.

‘It Shows Me Confidence That the Club Believe in Me’

Speaking about his new deal to the Leeds United website, Struijk was delighted that the club is continuing to show faith in him.

“I feel super happy,” he said.

“It’s always nice to be offered a new deal, it shows me confidence that the club believes in me and I am very happy.

“I’ve signed a four-year deal, so I hope to achieve a lot more and grow as a player myself.

“It was a big jump for me when I left Ajax and ever since it has been really good.

“Playing in the Premier League and seeing the level you are playing against has always been a dream and I’m currently living the dream.”
