Premier League Team of the Week – who makes our 11?
On a weekend where three sides held the top position in the Premier League, it’s Leicester City who go into the international break ahead of the chasing pack. Jamie Vardy’s first-half penalty the difference in their hard-fought victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur both spent periods at the top of the table over the weekend thanks to wins over Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion respectively. While Liverpool failed to regain top spot following their draw against Manchester City.
Elsewhere Manchester United left Goodison Park with all three points in Saturday’s early kick-off and Chelsea beat Sheffield United 4-1 after going behind early on. Crystal Palace recorded a victory of the same scoreline over Leeds United and West Ham United netted late to see off Fulham 1-0.
Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley played out the weekend’s only goalless draw. The final game of the weekend brought the most surprising result. Aston Villa put three past Arsenal without reply at the Emirates.
Premier League team of the Week – Week Eight
Formation: 3-4-1-2
Goalkeeper and Defence
GK: Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)
The Danish shot-stopper didn’t have much to do during his sides 1-0 victory over Wolves, however, made a stunning save late on to deny Ruben Neves.
CB: Wesley Fofana (Leicester City)
The Foxes have a real gem on their hands in Fofana. The Frenchman doesn’t turn 20 until December yet looks a seasoned veteran. Another solid and confident performance as Leicester go top.
CB: Thiago Silva (Chelsea)
Even at 36-years of age, Thiago Silva showed his class in his sides 4-1 victory over Sheffield United. Was calm and collected throughout and netted his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.
CB: Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur)
The Englishman was the standout player in an otherwise lacklustre game at the Hawthorns, his headed goal-line clearance denied an almost certain goal with the scores at 0-0.
Midfield
RM: Stuart Armstrong (Southampton)
Played from the right but often drifted inside, seemed to be everywhere in Saints 2-0 win over Newcastle. Scored his first goal of the campaign with a classy finish.
CM: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)
The Portuguese international proved his quality against Everton – scoring twice in the opening 45 minutes, both from open play. He then unselfishly set up Edinson Cavani late on.
CM: Fred (Manchester United)
He won’t grab the headlines, but United’s Brazilian worked his socks off against Everton and deserves to be in ahead of Paul Pogba on current form. His tenacious attitude allows Fernandes to do his thing further forward.
LM: Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)
The former Queens Park Rangers man had his best performance since his summer move to Selhurst Park. It was his corner that Scott Dann headed in for the opener before scoring his first Premier League goal with a delightful free-kick.
CAM: Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea)
The Moroccan makes the cut for the second consecutive week as he ran the show against Sheffield United. Although he didn’t get on the score sheet, he did bag two assists by putting the ball on a plate for Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva to score.
Forwards
ST: Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
He was playing in the Championship last season but Ollie Watkins already has six goals this term. The former Brentford striker netted twice in Villa’s surprise 3-0 against Arsenal.
ST: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)
Looked off it in the first half but ultimately came up trumps when he nodded in Matt Doherty’s lofted cross in the 88th minute. The winner turned out to be Kane’s 150th goal in the Premier League.
