Manchester City and Liverpool have dominated domestic football in England over the last few years. It was the Reds who ran out as winners last time out, whilst City were victorious in the previous two.
In more recent seasons, the Premier League has very much become a two-horse race between the pair. The elevation of both clubs has resulted in a distinct level between themselves and the rest of the Premier League.
Fast forward to the 2020/21 campaign and Liverpool lead the way yet again. However, City find themselves in 10th, but only five points off their title rivals, with a game in hand also in their favour.
Manchester City Deemed ‘Most Difficult Fixture in the World’ by Jurgen Klopp
Perfect Time for City Against a Depleted Liverpool
It has been a difficult time for Jurgen Klopp, with injuries to key men halting their progress. The injury to Virgil van Dijk will certainly continue to trouble the club, but Joel Matip is nearing full fitness and will bring some solidity to Liverpool’s back-line.
The Reds are also expected to be without midfield duo Fabinho and Thiago Alacantara, as the club intend to use the international break as a chance for the pair to regain fitness.
In more positive news for Liverpool, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is edging closing to a return. The midfielder is yet to make an appearance this season since injuring his knee in pre-season.
Jurgen Klopp on His Squad Ahead of ‘Most Difficult Fixture in the World’
Jurgen Klopp has conquerued Europe and the Premier League in the past two seasons, so when he compliments a team by labelling the fixture as the ‘most difficult in the world’ it means a lot. The German spoke very highly of Man City during his pre-match press conference: “It’s a very difficult game, hopefully for both teams. So many things are different this year, nothing can be compared with last year or the year before.
“I enjoy these kind of games, I enjoy the preparation, but it doesn’t make it easier, it’s just a really tough task. It’s not that we want to be dominating at home and like a deep-sitting team away. Saying that, against Man City exactly that can happen because of the quality they have.”
