REPORT: Mansfield Town Close to Appointing Nigel Clough

Mansfield

Mansfield Town are close to appointing Nigel Clough as the club’s new manager, according to John Percy.

Clough has been out of football since leaving Burton Albion at the end of last season. The Stags have been looking for a new manager since sacking Graham Coughlan last week.

The Stags have struggled so far this campaign, not winning any of their first eleven league games. Clough is the man Mansfield are hoping can ignite their disappointing season. The Stags sit third from bottom in League Two.

According to John Percy, Clough could be confirmed within in the next 24 hours and will sign a three-year deal at Field Mill. He was the number one choice for owner John Radford.

Clough Will Be Tasked With Igniting Mansfield’s Season

Clough is a vastly experienced manager who is ready to return to football after leaving Burton Albion. He left the Brewers after a terrific second spell at the club in which he took Burton to the Championship and kept them there for two seasons.

Clough knows all about the football league and has promotion credentials. He is the man Mansfield have targeted to ignite their flailing season. The Stags are one of two sides in the fourth tier yet to pick up a league win in 11 games and counting for Mansfield despite an improvement under caretaker manager Richard Cooper. Cooper oversaw draws against Walsall and Bolton Wanderers.

Clough’s appointment will be a welcome one as Mansfield desperately try to save their season. The Stags want to be amongst the promotion contenders having invested heavily in their squad in the summer. However, seven points from their first 11 games simply isn’t good enough.

It is unclear at this stage whether Clough will take charge of Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland. Clough’s first game in charge is likely to be Tuesday’s Papa John’s trophy tie away at Scunthorpe United. His first league game will be a trip to third place Forest Green Rovers a week on Saturday should he complete the switch.
