Barry Bannan Eager to Pen Down New Sheffield Wednesday Deal

Barry Bannan

The Yorkshire Post Reports that Barry Bannan is close to signing a new deal at Sheffield Wednesday, despite interest from elsewhere. The 30-year-old has become one of the most important players in recent history at the club, since arriving from Crystal Palace in 2015 and became Wednesday’s captain ahead of the 2020/21 Championship campaign.

Bannan remains adamant that he is happy where he is and would stay even if the Owls are relegated this season.

Interest From Championship Counterparts

Sheffield Wednesday started the season off brilliantly last time out, but started to fade away in the second half of last season. Their dip in form ran parallel to the increasing rumours of financial wrongdoings that eventually resulted in a 12-point deduction that was enforced this season.

However, during the uncertain times of 2020, one thing remained constant for Sheffield Wednesday – Barry Bannan’s form. His ability on the ball, coupled with his desire and passion for the club, was there for all to see. He has been a consistent performer for the Owls over the years, but last year his fine performances were attracting the attention of promotion-hopefuls Brentford.

The Bees, who were narrowly defeated in the play-off final against west London rivals Fulham, outlined Bannan as a player that would help the club go one step further and achieve their Premier League dream. Despite the prospect of joining a club who were on the rise, Bannan appeared happy at the club and wanted to help his side avoid relegation.

Bannan Not Keen on Relegation Get-Out Clause

Bannan’s intentions on staying were made clear when he told the Yorkshire Post that relegation would “not at all” change his mind. However, he wants his contract situation to be finalised sooner rather than later.

“I am happy where I am, the club’s been great to me so I hope something can get done.

“(I’d like it sorted) as soon as possible, really. No one likes to be letting their contract running down. You want clarity and you want to know what’s going on.

“Hopefully it gets sorted out as soon as possible. But, that’s down to the club and my agent to deal with that side of things.”
