Crystal Palace have made a late addition to their squad, confirming the arrival of Jack Butland from Stoke City.

The 27-year-old has signed a three year deal with the club. Following his departure, Stoke City have completed a deal to sign goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Southampton.

Premier League Return

Butland is making his Premier League return after two years away in the Championship.

He was part of the Stoke City side that suffered relegation in the 2017/18 season. After a miserable season, it was Palace who sent them down after a late Patrick van Aanholt goal condemned them to relegation.

Despite being keen to remain in the Premier League, Butland could not secure a return to the top-flight. As a result, he remained with the Potters.

However, like the rest of his team-mates, Butland endured a miserable season during the 2018/19 campaign. The Potters finished 16th and looked on the verge of relegation at one point. The 27-year-old featured 45 times, conceding 52 goals.

Last season saw Butland lose his place in the Stoke side. Injuries and high-profile mistakes saw him replaced in goal by both Adam Federici and Adam Davies at time during the campaign. In total, he made 36 appearances, keeping just nine clean sheets; in comparison, he made an impressive 18 during the previous campaign.

How Will He Fit in at Crystal Palace?

The 27-year-old is likely to play second fiddle to first-choice goalkeeper Vicente Guaita at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles were not expected to sign a goalkeeper during this window, but Wayne Hennessey has reportedly suffered a long-term injury, meaning they are need of reinforcements.

While Butland will only feature sporadically, he will prove to be a good addition to the camp, despite his downturn in form in recent years. The once England international and highly-rated goalkeeper will add quality to a position that the Eagles have lacked in recently.

Butland is the fifth player to join this window, and follows in the footsteps of latest arrival Nathaniel Clyne.
