It is fair to say that Sergio Romero’s time at Manchester United has been rather difficult. In recent years, he has spent the majority of his time on United’s bench – only being used in the club’s cup competitions. Despite consistently displaying that he had the ability at that level, he was often overlooked in the latter stages.
The Argentinian goalkeeper has been linked with moves away over the transfer window. However, it seems his chances of securing a deal have slimmed with the international transfer deadline passing last night.
Manchester United Goalkeeper Sergio Romero’s Future Remains Unclear
Sergio Romero Slipping Down United’s Pecking Order
The return of Dean Henderson from his season-long loan at Sheffield United has dampened Romero’s chances of playing in the Premier League even more. It is certainly a good problem for United, having three world-class goalkeepers amongst their squad. However, it is a difficult situation if you are the third-choice keeper, like Romero currently is.
The young English shot-stopper has taken Romero’s spot on the United bench. Additionally, Henderson has started both Carabao Cup victories against Luton and Brighton & Hove Albion retrospectively, with the Argentinian not even making the bench.
Everton Rumours Fizzling Out After Robin Olsen Signing
The 33-year-old’s situation at United caught the eye of table-toppers Everton, according to The Guardian. The Toffees were in need of a goalkeeper who could challenge and contest for the club’s number one shirt.
However, it seems that late last night, the Toffees filled that void. Everton struck a deal with Roma for Swedish shot-stopper Robin Olsen on a season-long loan, seemingly diminishing the likelihood of Romero heading to Merseyside.
Sergio Romero’s Wife Voiced Her Opinion on Instagram
United’s disrespectful treatment of the Argentine keeper was voiced by Romero’s wife on Instagram. Eliana Guercio took to the social media platform to voice her concern over the lack of respect United have shown Romero.
She praised his hard work and highlighted his significant contributions to the club, saying: “It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. Respect for once.”
Romero’s last chance this transfer window is to find a domestic suitor. It seems that a move to Everton is now highly unlikely, but his availability may just spark another club.
