Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has joined Porto on a season-long loan. There is no obligation to buy for the Portuguese club.

Porto Loan for Marko Grujic Could Spell End of Liverpool Career

Grujic is Yet to Cement a Place in Klopp’s Plans Despite Five Years at the Club

Although there is no obligation to buy in the deal, Grujic’s time at Merseyside is most likely coming to an end.

Since joining in 2016, the Serbian has barely featured under Jurgen Klopp – although he did score in Liverpool’s 7-2 rout of Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

Grujic spent the last two seasons on loan at Hertha Berlin. His spell in the German capital was successful, scoring nine goals in 54 appearances.

A permanent move to the Bundesliga was on the cards on deadline day. However, according to The Athletic, a transfer to Werder Bremen had failed to materialise.

Liverpool also failed to sell the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Harry Wilson in this transfer window. This left the Premier League champions with 18 non-homegrown senior players available. Only 17 are allowed in both the Premier League and Champions League.

As a result, Porto were able to secure Grujic’s services on a temporary basis. The Portuguese transfer window remains open for another three weeks.

Champions League Football on Offer for Grujic

A move to Porto will give Grujic the chance to play Champions League football. The two-time European champions are in Group C with Manchester City, Marseille and Olympiakos.

Should Grujic impress with the 29-time Primeira Liga champions, then there is still a possibility Klopp will give him a chance next season.

However, at 24, Grujic can no longer be considered “young” – and it may be time to seek new pastures for the playmaker.

He is set to join his new teammates after the international break.
