REPORT: Move for John Stones Seems Unlikely for Tottenham Hotspur

John Stones

Tottenham have indeed been interested in a move to sign Manchester City John Stones, but according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the defender isn’t likely to leave the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham Unlikely to Sign John Stones

Spurs Were Keen on Signing Stones

According to  The Daily Mail, the defender was drawing interest from Jose Mourinho’s side. The two clubs had reportedly been in touch over a potential deal for the England international.

However, Ornstein has come out and claimed that despite this initial contact, a deal to send the 26-year old to Spurs isn’t going to happen today.

Too Expensive for Tottenham

The former Everton man could be too pricey for Tottenham, who are more likely to look elsewhere for a cheaper option in the centre of their defence. The deal itself could prove to be too much money for Spurs.

As for City, although the centre-back has only played in one game so far this season, they would rather sell another defender over Stones.

Therefore, with both clubs unwilling to budge on a deal for the defender, a move to send him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looks off the table.

From Barnsley to the Premier League

Stones began his playing career at Barnsley as a 17-year old, where he impressed in the Championship over the course of two seasons and 24 first-team games for the club.

It led to a switch to Everton in the top tier of English football at just 19-years of age. After an impressive three campaigns for the Toffees, he caught the eye of big-spending City, who brought him to the Etihad Stadium.

With City, he has won two Premier League titles and featured in 86 games for the club. However, he has slowly begun to fall out of favour at the club and has started to feature less and less for Pep Guardiola.
